New survey by Viagra Connect™ reveals younger men have erection problems too

…but are less likely to suffer in silence

·       Survey finds that nearly a third of younger men suffer from erection problems (EPs)

·       Younger men more open and willing to talk about sexual problems than the older generation

·       Many older men suffering from erection problems (EPs) needlessly

A new surveyi conducted by Viagra Connect of almost 4,000 UK men aged 18-74 years, has revealed that nearly a third of men aged 18-34 years old suffer from erection problems (EPs), which is almost as many as men aged 55 plus (37%).

Traditionally seen as an ‘older man’s’ problem, the survey showed that more than 1 in 4 men (28%) suffer from EPs and of those the majority (60%) experience EPs at least half the time.

Younger men are more open about EPs

However, the survey also revealed that of those men aged 34 years old and younger, 28% believed EPs are something that should be spoken about openly versus only 9% of men aged 55 plus. Similarly, 40% of the younger aged respondents said they thought EP were more about addressing a lifestyle issue than a health condition versus only 18% of those in the older age bracket.

And younger men are more likely to use an OTC treatment for EPs

This disparity in mindset between the two age categories, also translates to treating their EPs. Despite around a third of EP sufferers having used an OTC medication for their EP in the last 12 months, the results showed that Viagra Connect had been purchased more among younger men than older age groups (52% by men under aged 35) versus (34% by men aged 55+).

Commenting on the findings of the survey, Consultant Cardiologist and men’s health specialist Dr Husain Shabeeh says, “The survey shows that younger men as well as older are suffering from EPs.  For men under the age of 35 it is likely to be a combination of modern-day lifestyle factors as well as them being more open about admitting they are sufferers and seeking help.  What is encouraging to see is that the younger generation are less likely to suffer in silence and are more motivated to quickly seek treatment.  Hopefully, this will in turn encourage older men to gain help and seek out treatment options.’

Rob Elliott, Pharmacy Marketing Director at Viatris comments, “Despite the survey showing that almost a third of men over 18 years old suffer from EPs, the findings demonstrate that a stigma around the condition, especially for older men, still exists.  We hope that this fact, plus that younger men are more confidently and effectively treating their EPs with OTC treatments will help further breakdown taboos around this condition.”
